Typhoon Doksuri cancels 275 flights and cuts power to thousands of homes in Japan

Typhoon Doksuri caused the cancellation of 275 flights in Japan, amid warnings of record-breaking rainfall as it approached the capital, Tokyo.

The typhoon, accompanied by fierce winds, led to the early closure of one of the world’s largest video game exhibitions in the capital, as well as power outages affecting thousands of homes.

The Japan Meteorological Agency had forecast yesterday that rain and winds would intensify even before the typhoon’s arrival, warning that total rainfall could exceed the monthly average for September, potentially leading to unprecedented levels of heavy rain.

Wind speeds reached 144 kilometers per hour as the typhoon approached within approximately 110 kilometers of Hachijojima Island, one of the most distant islands from Tokyo.

Power was cut to more than 4,000 homes today in the neighboring Chiba Prefecture. Japan Airlines canceled 120 domestic and 15 international flights, while All Nippon Airways canceled 140 domestic flights.

Railway companies in Tokyo and surrounding areas suspended services on certain lines.
