It is good that the government is moving to mandate a compulsory training course for those preparing for marriage, as this serves to define the meaning of this permanent partnership and leads to the formation of a fully constituted family. It is primarily a psychological investment for both parties.
Many young couples view marriage merely as one of life’s pleasures, whereas it is a complete partnership in feelings and bonds, involving mutual rights and obligations and significant responsibilities. Therefore, when we speak of a “marriage contract,” the meaning is far broader than marriage itself. The union is much deeper than a mere relationship; there is a process between spouses that must proceed according to clear parameters, leaving no room for ambiguity between them.
In this context, union implies integration, with no reservations. Failure must be prohibited under all circumstances, except in cases where one party abandons the other, thereby abandoning a shared, and indeed social, destiny.

In Islamic jurisprudence, marriage is defined as “a solemn covenant between a man and a woman.” As we know, a covenant is a strong, firm, and very binding pledge that is difficult to break or dissolve, because its primary goal is to build a stable family, meet innate needs, and achieve affection and cooperation.
This investment is not only emotional but also social and familial, based on solid foundations between the two for mutual cooperation, where two personalities merge to form a single legal entity.
Therefore, all religions consider this union the foundation of society. Hence, the mandatory course for those preparing for marriage is a significant step toward establishing a successful family. Its compulsory nature and its requirement as a prerequisite for formalizing the marriage contract effectively prevent future grounds for divorce and clarify the understanding of the sanctity of married life, as it is not merely a temporary phase but an eternal relationship.
For several years, there have been calls for such a course, particularly following the rise in divorce rates in Kuwait. Therefore, its approval today is very positive, as it is better to come late than not at all.
The definition of marriage in the Holy Quran, and indeed in all heavenly scriptures, is based on affection and mercy. Emotions should express this through proper compassion. When one party suffers from a difficulty, the other must demonstrate responsibility to fulfill their role in a way that serves the success of the relationship. This is demonstrated through empathy in both prosperity and adversity, not merely through taking. Thus, holding on to what is right or releasing with kindness is also the foundation of mercy, and avoiding harm, both social and moral.
