France: Armed man shot dead by police during arrest attempt in Bougie

A man in his 30s was shot dead by police on Saturday in the city of Beauvais, in the Oise department in northern France, after he opened fire on security forces as they attempted to arrest him at his home, injuring a police officer in the arm.

French media quoted Beauvais Prosecutor Nicolas Sept as saying that the man was seen early in the morning riding a motorcycle and firing several shots from a handgun, before police identified him and located him using surveillance cameras.

He added that police officers went to the man’s home to arrest him, but he opened fire on them as they attempted to enter, resulting in one officer being wounded in the arm.

The prosecutor explained that security forces issued warnings to the man and used a Taser before returning fire after being hit by several shots, noting that the armed man received on-site medical aid before dying, while his family members inside the home were unharmed.

The prosecutor’s office announced the opening of two investigations into the incident: the first concerning acts of violence, threats with a weapon, and attempted murder of police officers; and the second examining the circumstances under which security forces used their weapons, with the participation of the General Inspectorate of the National Police.
