- Signs law tightening sanctions on Russia and Iran

US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that an agreement had been reached with Denmark and Greenland, granting the United States, in his description, “permanent control” over the island’s security, coinciding with his signing of a new law expanding sanctions on Russia and Iran.

Trump stated in a post on the “Truth Social” platform that the United States had concluded an agreement with the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland, granting it “permanent control over security and all other needs” on the island, and emphasizing that the deal addresses US security concerns without imposing any cost on Washington, according to him.

He added that the United States would be able “forever” to take whatever it deems necessary to secure Greenland and defend it and its national security, noting that no adversary of Washington would be able to establish a base, military presence, or carry out sensitive investments on the island without US approval.

Trump announced that his country would immediately begin developing its military presence in Greenland, describing the agreement as “historic,” while the territory remains autonomous within the Kingdom of Denmark, and the agreement does not involve a transfer of sovereignty over it to the United States.

In a separate matter, the White House announced that Trump signed a new law to tighten sanctions on Russia and Iran, after it was approved by Congress with support from both the Republican and Democratic parties.

The White House clarified that the legislation, named the “Lindsey Graham Act,” expands the scope of sanctions, tariffs, and restrictions imposed on Russia, and extends existing sanctions on Iran.

The US House of Representatives had previously approved the bill by a vote of 262 in favor and 159 against, as part of an effort to increase economic pressure on Moscow amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The law grants the US president the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on countries purchasing Russian oil and gas, and expands sanctions to include officials, financial institutions, and sectors linked to Russia, alongside broadening restrictions on Iran.
