16 killed, 57 injured in suicide bombing in northwestern Pakistan

At least 16 people, including five police officers, were killed and 57 others injured on Friday in a suicide attack targeting a police complex in the city of Kohat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in northwestern Pakistan, during Friday prayers at a mosque inside the complex, according to Reuters.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police Chief Dhulfiqar Hamid said a suicide attacker rammed a car loaded with explosives into the outer wall of the complex while police personnel and their family members were performing Friday prayers inside a mosque within the facility. Armed accomplices then opened fire, triggering clashes with security forces.

The attack killed five police officers and 11 civilians, while the seven attackers were killed in the explosion and the subsequent clashes.

Footage from the scene showed extensive damage to the mosque and surrounding buildings, as rescue teams worked to pull victims and the injured from the rubble.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, while the Pakistani Taliban denied involvement.
