UN General Assembly allows Palestine to participate in its deliberations with a recorded statement

The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on Thursday allowing the State of Palestine to participate in the high-level general debate of the 81st session through a pre-recorded address by its President, to be screened in the General Assembly Hall.

The resolution was supported by 152 countries, opposed by three, and four countries abstained. In the resolution, the General Assembly expressed regret over the United States’ decision to refuse entry visas to representatives of the State of Palestine and to revoke previously issued visas, thereby preventing their participation in United Nations meetings.

The General Assembly clarified that the resolution does not set a precedent for future general debates or high-level meetings, while emphasizing the importance of enabling representatives of the State of Palestine to participate in person in relevant United Nations meetings in New York.

The high-level general debate of the 81st session of the General Assembly is scheduled to take place from September 22 to 28 of this month.

Last year, the General Assembly adopted a similar resolution allowing Palestine to deliver a pre-recorded address by its President after his in-person participation was not possible. That resolution was supported by 145 countries, opposed by five, and six countries abstained.
