A 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Jailolo area in North Maluku province, Indonesia, on Thursday.
The Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics stated that the earthquake occurred 118 kilometers west of Jailolo, at a depth of 24 kilometers.
Parts of Indonesia are regularly affected by earthquakes due to their location along the Pacific Ring of Fire, known as the “Ring of Fire,” where several tectonic plates converge, causing frequent volcanic and seismic activity.
It is worth noting that a 9.1-magnitude earthquake hit Aceh province in 2004, triggering a tsunami that killed more than 170,000 people in Indonesia.
