The Military Criminal Court in Homs issued sentences Thursday against four defendants linked to the events in Syria’s coastal region, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).

The court sentenced one defendant to death, another to life imprisonment, and a third to 20 years in prison, while acquitting the fourth defendant.

The head of the Military Criminal Court, Zakaria Bakkar, announced the death sentence for one of the defendants, who was convicted of crimes including “an attack aimed at inciting civil war and sectarian conflict, and participation in an armed gang intended to confront public security forces, resulting in the deaths of more than two people.”

The court also convicted another defendant of participating in an armed gang tasked with committing murders, looting, and pillaging, sentencing him to life imprisonment.

In a third case, the court convicted a member of the Ministry of Defense of intentional homicide, sentencing him to 20 years in prison, with time spent in pretrial detention credited toward the sentence.

The Syria’s coastal region witnessed violent clashes last year, which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people.
