Humility and you will witness the wonders of humility in your life

Dialogues

“And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily, and when the ignorant address them, they say [words of] peace.” (Al-Furqan 63)

A person is humble when they do not act arrogantly. This is an ethical behavior that transforms the life of the humble into one that is happy, reassuring, and fulfilling. Humility is a voluntary behavior; one cannot be forced to be humble unless the importance of humility has taken root in their heart. It becomes difficult to sustain a false pretense of humility. Among the wonders that inevitably occur in the life of a person who chooses humility are the following:

- God arranges for people to support the humble: Many people willingly offer assistance and facilitate the life of the humble, recognizing that they deserve support because they lack arrogance. They will appreciate the help given to them and may reciprocate with similar positive behaviors. It is rare to find the arrogant beloved by the general public or to see people eager to serve them, because their arrogance drives reasonable people away. The more humility becomes entrenched in a person’s character, the more you will find them surrounded by the righteous, the balanced, and other humble individuals who hold them in high regard.

- Arrogance is weakness, and humility is strength: A person chooses humility, even though in today’s turbulent world, they could choose arrogance. However, the person who is confident in themselves, their abilities, and their moral integrity chooses humility over arrogance, because the latter reveals severe psychological weakness and a serious lack of self-confidence. The arrogant person seeks to compensate for this deficiency by adopting an attitude of arrogance.

- Arrogance is linked to ignorance: Personally, I have not seen, to this day, an arrogant person who was not immersed in some form of ignorance, whether simple or complex. This ignorance is usually accompanied by mental weakness or a lack of situational awareness in the arrogant individual, due to their deep immersion and excessive preoccupation with their own arrogance, to the point of detachment from reality. In contrast, the humble person learns from life experiences, and their situational awareness strengthens because their mind is not clouded by arrogance.

- The humble enter Paradise: It is stated in the noble Prophetic Hadith: “No one whose heart contains an atom’s weight of arrogance will enter Paradise,” and “A group of people whose hearts are like the hearts of birds will enter Paradise.” So, be humble, and you will enter Paradise, or at least, there will not be an atom of arrogance in your heart when you are held accountable for your deeds. And God, the Exalted, knows best.
