Bahrain: Whoever targets the Holy Makkah targets the entire Ummah

Condemning the escalating Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, Bahrain called on the UN Security Council to take a firm stance

The Kingdom of Bahrain expressed its strong condemnation and denunciation on Wednesday of the escalating terrorist attacks carried out by the Iran-backed Houthi militia against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, including its attempt to target the Holy City of Mecca with a drone.

In a statement, the Bahraini Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the attempt thwarted by the Royal Saudi Air Defense Forces represents a deliberate repetition of the 2017 attempt to target Mecca, confirming that targeting holy sites is a consistent policy of this militia rather than an isolated incident.

The ministry considered this a blatant violation of international law, international humanitarian law, the UN Charter, the Charter of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and relevant UN Security Council resolutions, as well as a flagrant breach of the sanctity of the Holy Mosque and the sacredness of holy sites. It affirmed that Mecca is the qibla of Muslims, the site of divine revelation, and a secure sanctuary of God, and that anyone targeting it is targeting the entire Muslim ummah.

Bahrain reaffirmed its full solidarity with Saudi Arabia and its complete support for all measures taken to safeguard its sovereignty, security, and stability, and to protect its citizens and residents, in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter. It emphasized that the security and stability of Saudi Arabia are an integral part of the national security of the Kingdom of Bahrain.

The ministry commended the efficiency and readiness of the Saudi Armed Forces in repelling these attacks and protecting the Kingdom’s security and territorial integrity. It called on the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and its member states to adopt a unified and firm stance against the targeting of Islamic holy sites.

It also called on the UN Security Council to fulfill its responsibilities and take a firm stance to halt the repeated terrorist Houthi attacks targeting civilian infrastructure and religious sanctities, and terrorizing safe civilians in Saudi Arabia. It urged the accountability of the perpetrators and the implementation of Resolution 2817 (2026), including its call to cease support for proxy groups, thereby contributing to the preservation of regional and international security and stability and the protection of holy sites.
