60 killed in gold mine collapse in Sudan

The French news agency AFP reported on Wednesday that at least 60 people were killed in a gold mine collapse in West Kordofan state, Sudan, while several others remain missing, amid fears they may have perished under the rubble.

The agency stated that the incident occurred on Tuesday at the Al-Zar' mine near the city of Al-Nuhud in the state located in western Sudan, noting that rescuers had recovered 60 bodies by Wednesday morning.

In July last year, a partial collapse of a previously closed gold mine in Sudan killed 15 workers, according to a statement by the Sudanese Minerals Resources Company Limited.

The company explained in its statement that a number of workers had entered the Muhammad Tawfik mine in the Wadi Halfa area despite its closure following technical assessments that confirmed its danger, resulting in parts of the mine collapsing on them. The company noted that the incident resulted in the deaths of 15 workers and one injury.
