Psychological Strength and Confronting Life's Challenges
Dialogues
“Those to whom people said, ‘Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them,’ but it [merely] increased them in faith and they said, ‘Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs.’” (Al-Imran 173).
This article refers to psychological strength as an exceptional mental and emotional capacity that comes in two types: innate and acquired. It discusses the psychological strength that an individual can acquire, its motivators, drivers, and fundamental mechanisms, particularly how one can enhance their psychological strength when they need self-confidence, face severe psychological pressures, and navigate some complex life difficulties. These include the following:
- Psychological strength is innate and acquired: Every human being is born with a certain degree of psychological strength, which grows and strengthens over the years according to the nature of favorable circumstances. Some positive human environments allow an individual to naturally and gradually develop their psychological strength due to the absence of toxic psychological pollutants in these environments.

Conversely, some human environments hinder the development of psychological strength in individuals due to their saturation with pathological psychological complexes. Psychological strength develops gradually through the accumulation of life experiences, continuous learning from them, and a commitment to constructive thinking aimed at strengthening psychological immunity and developing psychological capacities, which in turn increase one’s resilience and psychological strength.
- Motivators, drivers, and mechanisms of psychological strength: In today’s turbulent world, psychological strength is fundamentally linked to a person’s ability to endure and cope healthily with exceptional psychological pressures, which many humans may not have encountered in the past. Those who spontaneously motivate themselves to acquire psychological strength will be closest to achieving, nurturing, and maintaining it at a spiritual and psychological level that aligns with various life challenges and difficulties. Those who self-motivate to gain more flexibility and psychological strength will develop a strong drive to enhance their personality and empower themselves. Through their psychological strength, they will be able to live a life that matches their aspirations and personal hopes. Some mechanisms for developing psychological strength include viewing every psychological pressure an individual faces as a personal challenge that enables them to test their psychological resilience, avoiding the avoidance of difficult situations and personalities, and paying attention to general physical health and strengthening the body, particularly through daily exercises.
