3 earthquakes strike Indonesia within hours, the strongest measuring 5.6 magnitude near Tobelo

A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck northeast Indonesia on Monday, according to data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The agency located the epicenter 78 kilometers north-northeast of the city of Tobelo, at a depth of approximately 162 kilometers, at 10:58 a.m. Greenwich Mean Time.

This was the third earthquake of magnitude 5.0 or higher recorded in Indonesia within hours, according to data from international and Indonesian monitoring agencies.

The Tobelo earthquake was preceded by a magnitude 5.5 quake that occurred southwest of Pelabuhanratu on Java Island at 9:27 a.m. GMT, according to USGS data.

Earlier on Monday, the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG) recorded a magnitude 5.2 earthquake in the sea southeast of Malang Regency in East Java at 8:42 a.m. local time. It located the epicenter 142 kilometers southeast of Malang at a depth of 10 kilometers, confirming there was no tsunami risk.
