4.9-magnitude earthquake strikes Japan's Bonin Islands

A 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck Japan’s Bonin Islands on Sunday.

The United States Geological Survey reported that the quake’s epicenter was at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Japan sits at the junction of four tectonic plates, making it particularly susceptible to seismic activity. The 2011 earthquake, which measured 9.0 on the Richter scale, was accompanied by tsunami waves that killed more than 15,000 people and triggered a disaster at the Fukushima nuclear power plant.
