'Samsung' mocks 'Apple': Tell us when you're done reheating our leftovers

Samsung did not wait long to respond to Apple’s entry into the foldable phone market, turning the launch of the “iPhone Duo” into a new round of marketing mockery between the two companies, as each seeks to strengthen its position in a market that remains limited in size but is evolving rapidly.

Apple revealed its first foldable phones, the “iPhone Duo,” on Wednesday, with prices starting at $1,999, a move that places it directly in competition with companies that preceded it in this category, most notably Samsung, which launched the first Galaxy Fold in 2019, according to specialized tech reports.

Samsung quickly responded via its accounts on the X platform, posting a series of sarcastic comments in tandem with the phone’s announcement. One comment read: “Let us know when you’re done reheating our leftovers,” implying that foldable phone technology has been familiar to the company for years. Another comment stated, “Nothing new so far,” according to MacRumors.

These messages reflect the South Korean company’s attempt to assert its precedence in the foldable phone market, having developed successive generations of these devices and worked on improving hinges, reducing thickness and weight, and addressing some of the screen issues that plagued early models.

On the other hand, Apple’s entry into this category carries different weight given its large user base and integrated tech ecosystem, which could give the foldable phone market a new boost.

According to Reuters, estimates suggest that up to 6 million units of the “iPhone Duo” could be sold by the end of the year, although foldable phones still represent a limited segment of the global smartphone market.

Price remains one of the key tests for the new phone, as the “iPhone Duo” starts at $1,999, with some higher-end models reaching up to $3,199, according to Reuters, making it one of the most expensive phones on the market and placing Apple before the challenge of convincing users that the foldable design offers value justifying this cost.

Competition is not just about who arrived first; Samsung now faces a competitor with significant potential to expand its user base in this category, while Apple faces the challenge of proving that its late entry into the market can offer a different experience, rather than merely catching up to what competitors have offered in recent years.

Between the sarcasm and marketing campaigns, the success of the “iPhone Duo” depends on its ability to deliver a comprehensive experience in terms of durability, ease of use, and battery life, while Samsung will need to prove that its long experience in foldable phones still gives it an advantage as competition intensifies.
