Syria: Nine pilots arrested, accused of war crimes during the ousted regime

- Participated in bombing operations that resulted in casualties, displaced residents, and destroyed civilian infrastructure

The Syrian Internal Security Forces announced the arrest of nine pilots, alleging their involvement in war crimes and violations against the Syrian people during the regime of ousted President Bashar al-Assad.

Brigadier General Abdulaziz Al-Ahmad, Commander of Internal Security in Latakia Governorate, stated that the Internal Security Directorates in the governorate, in cooperation with the Counter-Terrorism Branch, carried out a series of security operations following surveillance, monitoring, intelligence gathering, and investigations, which led to the arrest of the nine pilots.

Al-Ahmad clarified that those arrested are: Brigadier General Manhal Anwar Saleh, Brigadier General Sami Ibrahim Mahmoud, Brigadier General Ghiyath Ali Al-Rahiya, Colonel Issa Ezzeddin Khoudar, Colonel Marwan Salah Nafash, Colonel Bashar Samir Wanos, Lieutenant Colonel Ayham Hamza Aliya, Captain Ayham Ahmad Dawood, and Captain Ammar Issa Jenidi.

He added that according to investigations and available data, the suspects participated in committing crimes and violations in several Syrian governorates, exploiting their military positions and their specialization in the combat aviation and helicopter corps.

He pointed out that, according to investigations, these violations included bombing and targeting operations that resulted in a large number of deaths and injuries, caused severe damage to cities and towns, and led to the displacement of residents and the destruction of homes, facilities, and civilian infrastructure.

Al-Ahmad emphasized that their arrest is part of the continued pursuit of anyone proven responsible for committing crimes against Syrians, with a view to referring the perpetrators to the competent judiciary.

He stressed the continued commitment of the Internal Security Forces to protect citizens, safeguard their security and dignity, and pursue anyone who threatens societal security or is proven to be involved in shedding Syrian blood.
