U.S. President Donald Trump predicted that the war with Iran would end immediately following the U.S. midterm elections scheduled for November, asserting that Tehran is betting on the election results and the potential political changes they might bring to the United States.
Trump stated, in remarks relayed by Fox News, that Iranians are gambling on the U.S. elections, adding that they believe Democrats may be more lenient toward them on the nuclear file.
The U.S. president renewed his commitment to preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, affirming that, in his view, the United States had dismantled Iran’s nuclear capabilities. He added that the Iranian regime would have used a nuclear weapon if those capabilities had not been destroyed.
Speaking on the military situation, Trump said Iranians are “fighting with difficulty and are in a dire predicament,” while acknowledging that Iran remains capable of launching some missiles.
He further stated that Tehran “cannot withstand the pressure for much longer,” expressing his belief that the war “will end immediately after the elections.”
Trump’s comments come as the United States continues to exert military and economic pressure on Iran, amid an ongoing conflict that erupted last February.
In a related development, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the Trump administration would impose sanctions on a major unnamed bank next Monday, as part of a campaign to intensify economic pressure on Tehran.
Bessent said the announcement of the sanctions was originally scheduled for Friday but was postponed due to ceremonies commemorating the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. He affirmed that the U.S. administration would continue to raise the financial cost for entities dealing with the Iranian regime.
Washington had previously escalated its economic campaign against Tehran under the name “Operation Economic Outcast,” targeting sectors and networks linked to oil, shipping, finance, digital assets, and aviation.
On the maritime front, Trump stated in earlier remarks that the United States controls the Strait of Hormuz, as U.S. forces intensified their naval operations and expanded pressure on Iranian oil exports.
The U.S. president provided no further details regarding the reasons for his expectation that the war would end after the midterm elections, content to link Tehran’s stance to its anticipation of the outcome of the U.S. political landscape.
