Tribalism Destroys Mental Health
Dialogues
One becomes fanatical when one indulges excessively in an inclination toward something, or when one clings to it, especially when one becomes extreme in tribal, ethnic, or cultural fanaticism. This is particularly evident when one angrily rejects others’ opinions, deeming them wrong simply because they differ from one’s own personal view.
People also become fanatical when they immerse themselves in fandom for a sports club. I am almost certain that a fanatic finds it difficult to maintain psychological and intellectual balance, leading themselves to destroy their mental health.
Among the prominent signs and causes in this regard, we mention the following:
- Fanaticism is a burning anger: At its core, fanaticism is based on a feeling of anger toward a certain situation, and anger toward those who are different, or toward what the fanatic cannot obtain or control. In addition to this simmering anger inevitably having a negative impact on the body’s internal systems, it will negatively affect blood pressure and weaken psychological immunity. Moreover, fanaticism characterized by intense anger may lead to an inability to exercise self-control, and the negative psychological state that follows can result in behavioral disasters and destructive consequences.

- The fanatic is a person who chooses depression: Depression is a mood disorder that leads to a near-permanent feeling of sadness and pessimistic thinking. I am also almost certain that many fanatics suffer from the depression of irritability and extremism, which is a dangerous type of pathological depression that destroys mental health.
- Fanaticism and narcissistic psychological biases: Much blind fanaticism is based on negative and excessive narcissistic biases toward the “other” who is different. This narcissism is “narcissistic” because it stems from an excessive admiration of the self, and “negative” because it relies on stripping the other of their human traits solely due to their difference from the fanatic. Excessive psychological biases represent the most prominent signs of psychological imbalance.
- Fanaticism and psychological imbalance: A fanatic is moody due to the impact of their fanaticism on their emotional balance, and undoubtedly suffers from some form of psychological imbalance. Due to their inability to cope healthily with psychological stress, they may develop mental illness. Once the natural psychological balance in a person begins to tip, one can only expect some form of psychological breakdown. And God knows best.
