Al-Rumaidi contacts 'The Easy Ladder for Learning Poetry at a Leisurely Pace'
It introduces new ideas for learning poetic meters and understanding rhythm.
Poet and researcher Salem Al-Rumaidi is preparing to publish his new book, titled “The Easy Ladder for Learning Poetry at a Leisurely Pace,” which includes new and accessible concepts for mastering poetic meters and comprehending their rhythm. The book features commendations from poets Ibrahim Hamed Al-Khalidi and Professor Dr. Mansour bin Saeed Abu Ras. In the book’s cover blurb, the author writes: “Poetry is easy and straightforward; its ladder is simple / if it contains scholars who understand it.” The book encompasses creativity, training, rhymes, poetic meters (buhur), and sound.
In this context, Al-Rumaidi stated: “Many people love poetry and wish to write it or understand its meter, but they stop at the first obstacle: the science of ‘arud’ (poetic prosody), with its rules and metrical feet, which appear complex and distant from the ear.
“This book represents an attempt to address this obstacle at its root, through a simpler method that relies on sensing rhythm by ear rather than memorizing visual rules that require paper and pen. Through this approach, anyone can, with a little practice, distinguish the meter of any poetic line and write metrical poetry with confidence, whether in Modern Standard Arabic or in colloquial (Nabati) poetry.”

He clarified that “the book consists of five chapters that guide the reader step by step: from the theoretical foundation of the concept, through the sixteen meters of Modern Standard Arabic poetry, then to the meters of Nabati poetry, with explanations and practical training, culminating in a special chapter featuring ten real-life case studies of creators who trained using this method and allowed their opinions and attempts to be published. These individuals are from Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Syria, and include prominent names in other literary fields, such as short stories, novels, poetic chanting (hadaw), and popular conversational poetry.
“The book also includes an appendix on innovative artistic forms, including ‘Al-Barzakh Al-Shi’ri’ (The Poetic Isthmus), an idea that has been enriched by the contributions of several proficient poets who added their rich experiences, inspired by the method and working within its framework.”
Al-Rumaidi explained that “the book is the fruit of years of teaching and direct training with hundreds of poetry enthusiasts. It received a commendation from Dr. Mansour bin Saeed Abu Ras, Professor of Language at Imam Muhammad bin Saud Islamic University, who wrote: ‘As for the book we are discussing, it perfectly matches its name: The Easy Ladder for Learning Poetry at a Leisurely Pace. It is an educational and training book in its field, for which examples are rare. When I read it, I continued to benefit from its insights and marveled at its firm grasp of its subject matter, even as I reached its conclusion. It undoubtedly has the precedence in its method and approach. I believe that this simplified method for teaching ‘arud’ will achieve widespread dissemination and unprecedented success, God willing.’”
