Consistent Commitment to Positive Change

Consistent Commitment to Positive Change

Dialogues

One persists in a habit when one continues it and solidifies it, especially when striving to maintain a new life, psychological, or behavioral state. Some individuals face difficulties in sustaining and persisting in positive change in their lives, particularly when altering their interactions and dealings with others. Among the factors that can help an individual persist, strive, and solidify in changing their personality for the better, we mention the following:

- Self-belief in the necessity of change: A person becomes convinced of the need to change their personality for the better when the destiny-altering nature of this matter for their future life settles in their mind. This conviction is reached through rational, sound, and calm thinking, especially non-emotional reasoning, and particularly when it is not merely a product of the moment.

One sign of internal self-belief in the necessity of positive change is the spontaneous emergence of psychological comfort and intellectual stability.

- Choosing an appropriate environment to sustain change: An individual changes themselves for the better in every aspect of their private life when the surrounding environment contains positive factors that help them achieve their new personal priorities and goals. Persisting in change becomes difficult if the surrounding environment is unsuitable, or if it is discouraging and inhibiting toward positive change.

- Rewarding oneself for persisting in positive change: Anyone who is convinced of the necessity of changing their personality and life situation for the better must also reward themselves if they begin to make positive steps along this path. Self-reward does not necessarily have to be material or even tangible; it can simply be self-praise for persisting in positive change.

- Pretend to change until it becomes real: Initially, a person pretends to possess the personality traits and behaviors they wish to become fixed and spontaneous characteristics. When they begin speaking and acting according to these requirements, they are not being hypocritical; rather, they are practicing positive change in reality. They stop previous behaviors they wish to discard and replace them with better ones.

For those who aim, intend, and purposefully change their behavior according to a new pattern, their usual way of thinking will gradually change, because their mind will alter the nature of its mental activity to align with the new personal situation. And Allah, the Exalted, knows best.
