Benefits and Drawbacks of a Good Heart
Dialogues
“And it will be said to those who feared Allah, ‘What has your Lord revealed?’ They will say, ‘Good.’ For those who do good in this world is good, and the home of the Hereafter is better. And how excellent is the home of the righteous.” (Surah An-Nahl, 30).
The noble Prophetic Hadith states: “A group of people will enter Paradise whose hearts are like the hearts of birds.” These are those who fear Allah, the Exalted and Mighty, in secret and in public; they are people of compassionate hearts, and those characterized by kindness and tenderness.
I believe that a good heart is an innate trait; a person is born with a good heart, and it forms the fundamental characteristic of their personality throughout their life. For some, it is a blessing, a benefit, and a source of barakah (divine blessing); for others, it can be detrimental, depending on the nature of the environment they find themselves in. Among its benefits and drawbacks, we mention the following:

- Benefits of a Good Heart: Not harboring grudges leads to the enduring peace of mind of a person with a good heart. Their heart resonates with those who share their goodness, and they enjoy genuine friendships with individuals who appreciate the purity of their heart and their sincerity. Such people are blessed in their provision, and a person with a good heart sleeps in a manner dominated by psychological and physical comfort, feeling refreshed upon waking.
A person with a good heart is humble by nature. It is rare that their humility does not earn them the respect and appreciation of the righteous in their surrounding environment. They may well be the luckiest among their neighbors, as they maintain family ties. Consequently, it is rare that they are not blessed in their provision, children, and family. Psychological complexes are reduced in them due to the purity of their heart, particularly because of their innate ability to automatically discard negative psychological residues.
Perhaps their heart is largely free from worries, as they leave creation to the Creator. They treat people with ease, gentleness, and genuine empathy, which many people find difficult not to reciprocate.
- Drawbacks of a Good Heart: Occasionally, a person with a good heart faces difficulties in dealing with those of malicious intent, especially those who view their goodness as a vulnerability in their personality that can be exploited for personal gain. Arrogant individuals may dare to mistreat them, assuming that the person with a good heart will not retaliate twice as hard. They may test their voluntary patience with rudeness, potentially causing temporary psychological pain. Because a person with a good heart is kind both inwardly and outwardly, it may be difficult for them to detect manipulators and those with ill intentions early on, thereby making it harder for them to avoid these individuals and protect themselves from their evil.
