5 killed, 5 injured in cargo plane crash at Miami airport

Five people were killed and five others injured, three of them in critical condition, after a cargo plane belonging to Amazon’s logistics group veered off the runway at Miami International Airport in the United States and collided with several vehicles before catching fire, local authorities announced on Sunday.

The aircraft had arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico, before overshooting the end of the runway around 2:00 p.m.

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said during a press briefing at the airport that the crash resulted in five deaths and five injuries, noting that three of the injured were in critical condition.

More than 60 units from the Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue Department responded to the scene, where teams found the aircraft engulfed in flames upon arrival. They worked to extinguish the fire and assess the condition of the victims.

The National Transportation Safety Board announced it had dispatched a team to Miami to investigate the circumstances of the accident, led by Jennifer Homendy.

For her part, Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel said the company is working closely with local authorities and officials to determine the details of what happened, emphasizing that the current priority is the safety and care of all those involved.
