“He grants wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever is granted wisdom has certainly been given much good. And none will remember except those of understanding.” (Al-Baqarah 2:269)

I believe that true wisdom, following the advent of Islam and in what is to come by God’s will, is knowledge of the Holy Quran, reflecting on its meanings, ethics, and inexhaustible wisdom.

I have read about wisdom in many human scientific and philosophical sources, and I have come to the firm conviction that wisdom, and its rich source for Muslims, is the Glorious Book, which the Almighty describes as: “Nay, it is a glorious Quran, [engraved] in a Preserved Tablet.” (Al-Buruj 85:21-22). The Criterion does not change, nor does it alter, nor does its wisdom diminish; rather, more of it is revealed with every reading.

It contains everything people need in life, both in this world and the Hereafter. Among the Quranic verses that I believe reveal unparalleled Quranic wisdom at all times, we mention the following:

- Relieving the hardship of this world through repentance, remembrance of God, and persistent seeking of forgiveness: A person remembers God Almighty through obedience, persistent recitation of the Holy Quran, embodying His morals, repentance, and persistent seeking of forgiveness, and the hardship of their soul transforms into comfort and joy. “And whoever turns away from My remembrance – indeed, he will have a depressed life, and We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind.” (Ta-Ha 20:124). “And it is not for Allah to punish them while you, [O Muhammad], are among them, and Allah would not punish them while they seek forgiveness.” (Al-Anfal 8:33).

- Quranic wisdom and those of understanding: “Then is one to whom the evil of his deed has appeared pleasing to him, and he considers himself to be among the right-guided, [like one who follows the truth]? Indeed, Allah sends astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. So do not let their speech grieve you. Indeed, for Allah is the might, the wise.” (Note: The cited verse Al-Ra’d 13:19 is “Then is he who knows that what has been revealed to you from your Lord is the truth like one who is blind? Only will remember those of understanding.”) And whenever a Muslim reads the Holy Quran and reflects on its wisdom, they become among those of understanding and people of insight.

- Western wisdom and Quranic wisdom: There is a vast difference between “wisdom” that began with secularism and sometimes ended with atheism, and Quranic wisdom that is based on the Oneness of God Almighty and His worship. The former is constrained by the limits of an imperfect human intellect, while the latter is not bounded by created intellect. The former revolves around contradictory worldly hypotheses, whereas the latter (Quranic wisdom) offers hope to every despairing person in today’s world that broken souls are healed through faith in God, obedience to Him, and remembrance of Him: “O mankind, there has to come to you instruction from your Lord and healing for what is in the breasts and guidance and mercy for the believers.” (Yunus 10:57)
