Algeria: Rescue of child Ayoub enters critical phase after descent into the parallel well

Algerian Civil Protection teams continued on Saturday, for the fourth consecutive day, their efforts to rescue Ayoub, a child trapped in a dry artesian well in the province of El Bayadh. The operation has reached an advanced stage, with specialized teams descending into a parallel well drilled alongside the one in which the child fell.

In its latest statement regarding the operation, Civil Protection announced that specialized rescue teams had descended into the parallel well to continue search efforts and reach the child’s location for his evacuation.

Excavation work continues using heavy machinery and manual intervention, leveraging human and material resources and relying on specialized experts and technicians, given the difficulty of the operation and the nature of the soil.

The Director General of Algerian Civil Protection, Colonel Boualem Bouglaf, arrived at the accident site this morning to monitor the rescue operation on the ground. He reviewed the various stages of the operation, the human and material resources deployed, and the conditions under which Civil Protection teams, experts, and technicians were working.

Rescue teams had previously completed the vertical drilling of a parallel well to the one containing Ayoub, reinforcing it with pipes to prevent soil collapse, in preparation for continuing work from below toward the child’s location.

Civil Protection confirmed that rescue teams would continue their efforts until they reached the child and worked to extract him. As of now, no announcement has been made regarding his discovery or evacuation.

Earlier, Civil Protection had denied rumors circulating on social media claiming that Ayoub had been reached, reiterating that the rescue operation was still ongoing.
