5.8-magnitude earthquake strikes Kermadec Islands in New Zealand

A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck the Kermadec Islands region of New Zealand on Sunday, according to the US Geological Survey.

The agency reported that the quake occurred at 09:02:09 UTC, with its epicenter located at 30.146 degrees south latitude and 177.888 degrees west longitude, at a depth of 35 kilometers.

The Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System classified the earthquake at the green level in terms of expected human impact, indicating a low probability of casualties.

In contrast, the GeoNet network, operated by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (Helmholtz Centre for Earth Sciences), estimated the earthquake’s magnitude at 5.4, with an initial depth of 10 kilometers.
