Sheikh Jaber Al-Jarrah's Visit to Japan Strengthens the Strategic Relations Between the Two Countries
On August 26, Foreign Minister Sheikh Jaraah Jaber Al-Ahmad paid an official visit to Japan, marking a new milestone that reflects the evolution of Kuwait-Japan relations and the sustained momentum in high-level reciprocal visits between the two countries.
The visit follows growing diplomatic engagement between Kuwait and Japan, bolstered by the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled’s visit to Tokyo in May 2025, which was followed by then-Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi’s visit to Kuwait in September of the same year.
Sheikh Jaraah Al-Jaber’s visit holds particular significance as it is the first standalone visit by a Kuwaiti foreign minister to Japan since 2010. Its timing, amid ongoing regional tensions, adds further importance for both countries and underscores the appreciation for the minister’s decision to undertake this trip under such circumstances.

During the visit, the Foreign Minister held a friendly meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, delivering a personal message from His Highness the Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad. The warm reception he received from the Prime Minister highlighted Kuwait’s esteemed status in Japan as a key partner.
The two countries share a set of core values and principles, foremost among them the rule of law, respect for international law, and a commitment to addressing issues through dialogue and cooperation with the international community, thereby enhancing their joint contribution to tackling regional and global challenges.
Prime Minister Takaichi conveyed to Sheikh Jaraah Al-Jaber her resolve to continue working closely with Kuwait for peace and stability in the Middle East, emphasizing Japan’s desire to play an active role in strengthening the resilience of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries through reconstruction and economic growth.
The robustness of relations between the two nations is evident in the numerous communications between Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and Sheikh Jaraah Al-Jaber over a short period, including phone calls in April and June, and a meeting in Ankara in July. During this meeting, Minister Motegi expressed his appreciation for Kuwait’s efforts to maintain secure and stable energy supplies to the global market amid difficult regional conditions. He specifically voiced his gratitude for the continued steady supply of crude oil from Kuwait to Japan.
Asian countries have been significantly affected by the current regional situation. In response, Japan launched the “POWERR Asia” initiative as a framework to enhance energy security, finance the purchase of emergency crude oil, and secure critical mineral supply chains across Asia. This initiative also contributes to expanding the supply centers and external reserves of oil-producing Gulf states in the Asia region, making cooperation with Kuwait in this regard indispensable.
Furthermore, Japan is promoting the “Free and Open Indo-Pacific” (FOIP) vision, which aims to preserve stability, ensure freedom of navigation, and support economic prosperity in vital sea lanes.
Undoubtedly, Kuwait is a crucial country for Japan in securing stable energy supplies. However, today’s relationship extends beyond this alone. Within the framework of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, we have built a broad-based relationship that is not limited to the economy but also encompasses education, culture, and sports.
It is worth noting that on August 24, 2026, we held a farewell ceremony at my residence for the Kuwaiti athletes participating in the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games and Asian Para Games, attended by Dr. Tariq Al-Jalahma, Minister of State for Youth and Sports Affairs.
