5.1 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Eastern Indonesia

A 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck an area in northern Maluku, eastern Indonesia, on Saturday, with no risk of a tsunami.

The Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics reported that the earthquake occurred at 15:08 local time, with its epicenter located in the sea off the Labuha area in northern Maluku, at a depth of 12 kilometers.

The agency clarified that the earthquake posed no tsunami risk, while urging caution regarding the possibility of aftershocks.

For its part, the GEOFON network, affiliated with the German Research Centre for Geosciences (Helmholtz Centre for Earth Sciences), estimated the earthquake’s magnitude at 5.1 and located its epicenter in the southern part of the Banda Sea, at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers.
