Norwegian Royal Court: King Harald's condition 'critically serious'

The Norwegian Royal Court announced on Thursday that the health of King Harald V, aged 89, has deteriorated and is described as “critically ill” while he is receiving treatment in the hospital.

King Harald was admitted to the hospital on August 17 to receive treatment for a blood infection.

The Royal Palace stated that Crown Prince Haakon and the Queen, Sonja, have canceled all scheduled engagements and events. Norwegian media reported that members of the royal family, including the Crown Prince and the Queen, were seen arriving at Oslo University Hospital, where the King is being treated.

Harald V has reigned as King of Norway since 1991 and is currently the oldest monarch in Europe.

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said, “The entire nation stands with us,” expressing his sympathy for the King and the royal family.

In 2024, King Harald announced that he would reduce his official activities due to his advanced age, but he ruled out abdicating the throne, emphasizing that the oath he took as king represents a lifelong commitment.
