Decline in Stress and Frustration Tolerance

“Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.” (Surah Ar-Ra’d, 28).
There is a psychological condition characterized by an individual’s reduced capacity to cope with psychological stress and the frustration they face in daily life. In my view, this has become a common phenomenon in today’s tense world. Below, we outline some of its symptoms and ways to mitigate its impact on physical and mental health:
- Symptoms: Excessive emotional sensitivity, quick temper, rapid irritability, overreaction, and a swift sense of frustration after experiencing failure or anticipated life shocks in today’s turbulent world. There is also a quick feeling of distress when subjected to ordinary life pressures, mental confusion when facing difficulties that require calmness and sound judgment, a tendency to delay fulfilling expected life responsibilities, emotional volatility, severe anxiety over life matters beyond one’s control or whose outcomes cannot be predicted, excessive and unproductive rumination, and self-reproach.

And impulsiveness in making decisive life choices, particularly a lack of awareness regarding which life and personal decisions are truly pivotal. Additionally, there is a rapid boredom with performing necessary personal and life tasks, due to biological, psychological, or mental imbalances in the individual.
- Protecting mental and psychological health from stress and frustration: Striving to obey Allah, the Exalted and Mighty; frequently seeking forgiveness; possibly leaving behind environments that cause psychological stress; learning diaphragmatic breathing techniques; walking outdoors; practicing a manual hobby; engaging in intensive reading across various fields; making a point to read the Holy Quran and understand its noble meanings; distancing oneself from psychologically toxic negative individuals, especially those who are deliberately depressed or pessimistic; avoiding the company of backbiters; and sleeping for 7 to 9 hours daily.
Furthermore, paying attention to personal hygiene and grooming, both at home and outside; purifying the heart from the psychological contamination one encounters in the external world through daily warm showers; praying upon entering the home; remembering Allah and making supplications without tedium; increasing consumption of vegetables and fruits; reducing, or completely abstaining if possible, from browsing on smartphones; activating “Do Not Disturb” mode at bedtime; and reciting the morning, evening, and bedtime supplications.
