95 dead and hundreds missing after catastrophic floods in Nepal

At least 95 people were killed in Nepal on Wednesday as catastrophic floods swept through the border region with Tibet, leaving hundreds of people, including foreign tourists, missing or out of contact.

Abi Narayan Kafli, a spokesperson for the Nepal Police, told Agence France-Presse that 95 deaths had been recorded so far, noting that around 28 police officers remained missing.

Initial reports indicate that a massive landslide of rocks and mud in the Lohandi River caused a surge of large volumes of water and debris. A 4.4-magnitude earthquake that struck before the disaster is believed to have contributed to the collapse.

Search and rescue operations continue amid widespread destruction of homes, roads, and energy facilities. Experts have warned of the possibility of another flood due to a blockage in the river upstream of the affected area.
