Space for Time

Tehran is facing political and security pressures, as well as a military and economic siege, and continues to stubbornly cling to its regime, despite the gap and divergent political interests between the opposition and the ruling system, as well as among the pillars of the ruling power. Will this economic siege yield results in the short term, leading Tehran to retreat from many of its political stances through smooth dialogue with regional and international mediators, including the Americans?

Pakistani mediators are still employing a long-term approach with Iranian politicians, and their shuttle diplomacy efforts to establish direct contact continue.

In response, the Iranians are playing the negotiating table by withdrawing previously agreed-upon cards and proposals, and once again pushing alternative cards and conditions based on their domestic political situation, among the pillars of governance and the system, and their differences regarding the agreement terms with the American interlocutor. At the same time, they are leveraging the positions of their clients in Beirut, Sana’a, and Baghdad.

The current economic siege must not be applied to Tehran alone; rather, there must be a siege on Iran’s clients in the region, as they represent focal points for its specific interests. There are other supporters along the lines of these focal points in the three capitals, some of whom are exposed, while others operate behind the scenes.

From this perspective, the economic siege card will have a significant direct and indirect impact, once the decision is implemented against Tehran and its clients, both covert and overt.
