Al-Sharaa Congratulates Syrians on Removal of Syria from State Sponsors of Terrorism List: 'We Tear a Page from Our Painful Past'

Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa congratulated Syrians on the removal of their country’s name from the list of state sponsors of terrorism, directing his gratitude to U.S. President Donald Trump and all those who stood by Syria.

Al-Sharaa said that Syria is “tearing off a page from its painful past to embark on a path of development, reconstruction, and nation-building.”

This comes a day after Washington announced the removal of Syria from the list of state sponsors of terrorism, ending a designation that had lasted 47 years and was accompanied by stringent economic sanctions, in an additional step toward strengthening relations between the two countries.

For his part, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani described the U.S. decision to remove Syria from the list of state sponsors of terrorism as a “historic event,” adding that this step was the fruit of the transformation achieved by Syrians and a reflection of the new Syrian state’s commitment to international security and peace.

Al-Shibani noted that the policies and practices of the former regime were never the choice of the Syrian people, nor do they befit Syria and its history, clarifying that his country will continue to work to remove the effects of isolation within a framework of transparency.
