The United States turned the page on a chapter that lasted nearly 47 years today, Monday, after officially removing Syria’s designation as a “state sponsor of terrorism,” in a new step within the U.S. path to easing restrictions and paving the way for further investments and support for economic and political stability in the country.

The U.S. Department of State announced the removal of Syria’s state sponsor of terrorism designation, after it had been listed since 1979, following the completion of the review period before Congress for the decision announced by President Donald Trump last July.

Concurrently, the U.S. State Department removed the designation of “Jabhat al-Nusra,” also known as “Hayat Tahrir al-Sham,” as a specially designated global terrorist organization, while the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) under the Treasury Department removed “Hayat Tahrir al-Sham” from the list of Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons.

The Treasury Department clarified that Syria is no longer subject to sanctions associated with the state sponsor of terrorism designation following the decision to remove it from the list.

This new measure follows the U.S. State Department’s July 2025 decision to remove the designation of “Hayat Tahrir al-Sham” as a foreign terrorist organization.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the department is moving forward with implementing President Trump’s pledge to give the Syrian people an opportunity for progress, affirming that today’s measures will help encourage further investment in Syria, thereby supporting political and economic stability.

The removal of Syria’s state sponsor of terrorism designation does not mean the lifting of all U.S. sanctions, as Washington continues to impose targeted sanctions on Bashar al-Assad, several of his associates, human rights violators, Captagon traffickers, and other parties linked to terrorism, Iran, and its proxies.

President Trump had notified Congress last July of his decision to remove Syria from the list of state sponsors of terrorism, as part of U.S. measures aimed at easing restrictions on the country and supporting its reconstruction and economic opening.
