- Sanctions target the "shadow fleet" and five vital arteries including gold, technology, aviation, shipping, and digital assets.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced today the launch of the "Economic Outcast" operation against Iran, under directives from President Donald Trump, affirming that the United States has demonstrated its resolve to end what he described as the "Iranian threat."
Bessent stated that Iran must choose between "total isolation or returning to the international community," noting that Trump has asked world leaders to stop purchasing Iranian oil and warned that any entity allowing financial transfers to Iran would face sanctions.
He added that "no one is immune from sanctions, including China," and that any economic dealings with Iran would expose those responsible to the "full scope of American power," urging countries facilitating dealings with the Iranian regime to absorb and respond to the US message promptly.
Bessent clarified that each country has a specific timeline to halt its activities with Iran as determined by the Treasury Department, noting that Washington would not announce specific deadlines for severing economic ties, but stressed that "our patience is not infinite."
He said the United States has "precisely identified every point of contact, every facilitator, and every network Iran has used to smuggle oil and circumvent sanctions," adding that the strength of the US economy allows Washington to continue this financial campaign in parallel with its military power.
He pointed out that the sanctions target five "vital arteries" exploited by Iran in other countries, including digital assets, technology, gold, the aviation sector, and maritime shipping, noting that the Iranian rial has continued its sharp decline and is heading toward a level of 3 million rials per dollar.
Bessent accused Iran of causing the death and injury of more US citizens and soldiers "than any other terrorist regime on Earth," stating that Washington is launching its economic offensive against Iran "with the spirit in which the Normandy landings were carried out in World War II."
He revealed that sanctions would be imposed on a major financial institution by the end of the week due to Iran, considering that the "last refuge of the Iranian regime is the mistaken conclusion of countries that still fund the Iranian threat in hopes of avoiding it."
For its part, the US Treasury Department announced sanctions on nearly 60 individuals, entities, and vessels linked to Iran, along with the suspension of general licenses that had allowed certain financial transfers to the country.
