'Tesla' promotes the launch of 'Cybercab'.. a self-driving taxi without a steering wheel or pedals

Tesla is preparing to take the self-driving taxi race to a new level, beginning promotions for the launch of the Cybercab, its vehicle designed specifically for driverless passenger transport, in a move aimed at competing with prominent companies in the field such as Uber and Waymo.

The company, founded by Elon Musk, posted an advertisement on social media on Friday, offering a chance to experience the Cybercab at an event taking place on September 3 in Austin, Texas, where Tesla’s headquarters is located.

The company stated on its website: “We are celebrating the launch of the Cybercab self-driving taxi at an exclusive event in Austin (...) and you can be there,” as part of a promotion for a contest offering the chance to win an invitation to attend the event.

The gold-colored vehicle, first unveiled in October 2024, is designed to carry two passengers and is Tesla’s first car completely devoid of a steering wheel and pedals.

Musk had previously announced that the company plans to begin production of the Cybercab before 2027, with the vehicle to be sold to individuals for less than $30,000.

In this context, the US technology news outlet The Information reported this week that Tesla employees were informed that the Cybercab launch would begin by providing the service to them, followed by integrating the vehicle into the company’s self-driving taxi fleet in Austin.

Additionally, Tesla watchers in recent weeks reported spotting lots containing large numbers of Cybercabs, sparking speculation about an imminent official launch.

Tesla launched its self-driving car service in Austin last year using the Model Y, before gradually expanding its autonomous taxi service to include other cities in Texas, Florida, and California.

However, the laws of these states require a human supervisor in most of these vehicles, who is ready to take control when necessary.

In contrast, Waymo, the self-driving taxi company owned by Alphabet, offers its services in 11 US cities.
