Italian tourist documents sighting of pink dolphins in Thailand

An Italian tourist documented a striking scene of pink dolphins swimming off the coast of Khanom, in southern Thailand, before sharing videos and photos of the sighting on social media, according to Italian media reports.

The Corriere della Sera newspaper reported that the tourist, Francesca Cagnon, spotted the dolphins during a boat trip in Khanom, an area within Nakhon Si Thammarat province, where several dolphins were seen swimming in the waters near the boat.

The dolphins featured in the footage belong to the Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin, scientifically known as Sousa chinensis, which inhabits coastal waters in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Some individuals of this species are distinguished by their striking pink coloration.

The waters stretching between Khanom and Don Sak are known habitats for this dolphin species. The Thai Department of Marine and Coastal Resources has previously documented populations of these dolphins during field surveys in the area.
