5.9-magnitude earthquake strikes eastern Japan

A preliminary magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck eastern Japan, with residents in the Tokyo area feeling the tremors, but no tsunami warning was issued.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the epicenter was located south of Ibaraki Prefecture, at a depth of approximately 70 kilometers.

The United States Geological Survey estimated the earthquake’s magnitude at 5.8.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, and footage from Japan’s public broadcaster, NHK, showed traffic moving normally in nearby cities, including Mito and Saitama.
