7.2-magnitude earthquake strikes southern Peru

A 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck the Ayacucho region in southern Peru on Thursday, according to the Peruvian Institute of Geophysics.

The institute stated that the earthquake’s epicenter was located 35 kilometers north of the city of Coracora, in the Parinacochas province of the Ayacucho region, at a depth of 108 kilometers.

For its part, the United States Geological Survey estimated the earthquake’s magnitude at 6.7 and located its epicenter 38 kilometers northwest of Huamanga, at a depth of 66 kilometers.

No immediate reports of casualties or major damage were received, and authorities confirmed there was no threat of a tsunami.
