Dozens of children died after a boat carrying a load exceeding its capacity capsized in Sokoto State, northwestern Nigeria, as search operations for missing persons continued, according to a local official, on Thursday.
Abdulkadir Yusuf, director of the Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority, said in a statement that rescue teams had so far recovered the bodies of approximately 40 children from the scene.
A local resident reported that local divers participated in the recovery efforts, while search operations continued for other missing individuals.
