Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam stated that his country remains committed to the presence of a UN force in the south, tasked with monitoring, reporting, coordination, and liaison.

Salam added that, during his meeting with a parliamentary delegation led by MP Melhem Khaled, which presented him with a copy of a letter signed by 86 MPs in support of continuing the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), he had personally conveyed Lebanon’s clear position on the matter to the UN Secretary-General during his visit to Beirut and in subsequent communications.

He clarified that the UN Secretary-General had expressed understanding of the need for a UN force to succeed UNIFIL in the south, a stance also reflected in his latest report on the issue.
