Dialogues

The “flaw” (khalla) is a trait of character, nature, and disposition, whether good or bad. The title of this article is derived from several sayings that highlight the presence of a “distinctive” flaw in a person, and how similar flaws tend to follow it, due to the interconnectedness of the components of an individual’s personality. Among the good and bad traits and their counterparts, we mention the following:

- Good traits: A person may exhibit a trait of generosity of spirit, which is accompanied by sister traits such as truthfulness in speech, trustworthiness, and keeping promises. A wise person can anticipate the presence of other good qualities in the personality of such individuals, because the human personality is an integrated system of values, principles, and personal life experiences. One whose nature is dominated by noble moral character will inevitably reveal other positive dispositions, because a single good trait in one’s personality stems from a specific psychological disposition and way of thinking. For example, one cannot expect a person with a distinctive good trait to display a negative trait that contradicts their innate nature.

Someone who wishes to understand the personality of a person with good traits can identify their other positive characteristics even before they naturally reveal themselves. Since their innate nature is sound, they will inevitably lean toward what is ethical, good, and respectable.

- Bad traits: A bad trait is a fundamental moral distortion embedded in the personality of someone with bad traits, negatively affecting other aspects of their personality, which may still be hidden from others. A stingy person must necessarily be miserly in spirit, and will inevitably reveal, perhaps after some time, traits worse than stinginess, such as narrow-mindedness, short-sightedness, hardness of heart, corrupt judgment, envy, and backbiting.

It also includes striving to sabotage the lives of those with good traits, hypocrisy, a tendency toward lying, and a propensity for psychological manipulation of others. A wise person should not trust someone with bad traits and must exercise extreme caution when dealing with them. A bad trait acts like a “gyroscope” that maintains direction and movement according to a fixed pattern that a person with bad traits does not deviate from. For this reason, a wise person has no choice but to anticipate worse behavior from them at all times and in all places.
