5.8-magnitude earthquake strikes Papua New Guinea

A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck the area near the northern coast of Papua New Guinea, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences.

The centre stated that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers beneath the Earth’s surface, with no immediate reports of casualties or significant material damage resulting from the tremor.

Papua New Guinea lies within the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a region characterized by frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to the movement and interaction of tectonic plates.

The area is periodically subjected to earthquakes of varying intensities, not all of which necessarily trigger tsunami waves or cause severe damage to infrastructure.
