5 injured in shooting outside Virginia State University student housing

Five people were shot, one of them in critical condition, in a shooting that took place in front of a student residence at Virginia State University on Saturday, according to the Chesterfield County Police Department in the United States.

Police said they responded to a report of gunfire at 05:28 GMT in front of the university’s student housing. Upon arrival, officers found five individuals injured by gunfire.

The five victims were transported to local hospitals. Police stated that the injuries of four of them are not life-threatening, while the fifth remains in critical condition.

Authorities noted that the university has reopened its doors, with an intensified security presence on campus as the investigation into the circumstances of the incident continues.

Founded in 1882, Virginia State University was historically known as a historically black university. Its campus is located approximately 40 kilometers south of Richmond.
