Canada imposes sanctions on five Iranian officials for threatening navigation in the Strait of Hormuz

Canada announced the imposition of new sanctions on five senior Iranian officials, citing their involvement in military and media activities that Canada said undermine security and stability and threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

The Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs stated that the sanctions targeted officials from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps due to activities described as threatening the Strait of Hormuz and navigation rights within it.

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand emphasized that freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz is a fundamental element of global trade and energy security, noting that the August 14 sanctions target individuals whose actions she said undermine these principles and threaten global economic and energy security.

She added that Canada calls on Iran to de-escalate tensions and respect international navigation rights.

The Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs clarified that the new sanctions bring the total number of Iranians subject to sanctions under the Special Economic Measures (Iran) Regulations to 232 individuals, while the number of Iranian entities covered by these sanctions has reached 260.
