Worker killed and five others injured in accident at Egypt's largest gold mine

A worker was killed and five others were injured on Sunday in an accident at the Sukari gold mine in Egypt’s Eastern Desert, following the fall of a rock into one of the underground tunnels used for mining operations, according to the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources.

The ministry said the injured were transported to a hospital in the Red Sea coastal city of Marsa Alam, noting that initial medical reports indicated their conditions were stable, as reported by Agence France-Presse (AFP).

The ministry has decided to temporarily suspend operations in the area where the accident occurred until compliance with safety standards is verified and necessary investigations are completed to determine the causes and circumstances of the incident.

Additionally, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi ordered the formation of an investigation committee to examine the accident, review safety procedures implemented within the mine, and take necessary measures to prevent similar incidents from recurring.

The Sukari mine, Egypt’s largest gold mine, is located approximately 30 kilometers southwest of Marsa Alam. It is operated by Sukari Gold Mines, a joint venture between the Egyptian government and AngloGold Ashanti, which acquired the previous operator, Centamin, in 2024.
