Following the great success of Part 1… Filming of 'Michael 2' begins in early 2027
Following the exceptional success that propelled the first part of the film "Michael" to surpass the $1 billion mark globally, Lionsgate has officially begun preparations for the second installment of Michael Jackson’s biography, targeting a start to filming in late 2026 or early 2027.
Adam Fogelson, head of the studio’s film division, revealed during an earnings conference call that "Michael 2" could reach theaters by the end of 2027 or during the first half of 2028, emphasizing that the goal is to deliver a second part that is "bigger and better," matching the success of the first film.

The announcement came less than four months after the release of the first part, directed by Antoine Fuqua from a screenplay by John Logan, and starring Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson’s nephew, in his cinematic debut.
The film covered the "King of Pop’s" career from his beginnings with the Jackson 5 through to the "Bad" album and his 1987 tour, concluding with the phrase "His story continues," a clear reference to the continuation of the biography in a second part.
"Michael" achieved a global opening weekend of $217 million, including $97 million in the United States and Canada and $120.4 million in international markets, before its revenues surpassed $1 billion. This milestone allowed it to overtake "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Oppenheimer," becoming the highest-grossing biographical film in cinema history and the first Lionsgate production to reach this figure.
Despite its commercial success, the film sparked debate due to its focus on Jackson’s artistic rise and its avoidance of the more controversial periods in his life, after legal complexities forced the rewriting of part of the final chapter and the deletion of some events from the original screenplay.
Fogelson confirmed that the second part will utilize large-scale musical scenes previously filmed, noting that a significant portion of them will be integrated into the new film, which could help reduce production costs and accelerate completion.
The final budget for the film and the specific time period it will cover have not yet been determined. However, the first part’s conclusion at the end of the "Bad" tour opens the door to exploring later stages of Jackson’s career, including the "Dangerous," "History," and "Invincible" albums, leading up to the most controversial years of his life.
"Michael 2" is part of a long series of works depicting Jackson’s life and career, which has remained a rich subject for cinema and documentaries due to his exceptional artistic success, personal transformations, and legal issues and controversies that persisted even after his death.
