German Matthias Jaissle appointed Newcastle manager, replacing Eddie Howe

English club Newcastle United have appointed German coach Matthias Jaissle as the new manager of their first team, succeeding Eddie Howe, marking the start of a new chapter in the Premier League for the young coach following a successful stint with Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli, according to the French news agency AFP.

Jaissle, 38, previously led Al Ahli to win the AFC Champions League Elite title in the 2025 and 2026 editions, in addition to securing the Saudi Super Cup in 2025.

In his first statement since his appointment, Jaissle said: “It is a great honor to become the manager of Newcastle United. This is one of the largest clubs in European football, with a rich history, identity, and a unique fanbase, and I am excited to embark on this experience.”

He added that the club’s ambition, future vision, and the progress it has achieved in recent years were among the main reasons that motivated him to accept the role.

Jaissle was forced to end his playing career at the age of 25 due to injury, before turning to coaching. His managerial journey began with Austrian club Liefering, where he guided them to their best-ever achievement by finishing as runners-up in the second division.

In 2021, he took charge of Red Bull Salzburg, leading them to win two consecutive Austrian Bundesliga titles, as well as the Austrian Cup.

The German coach moved to Al Ahli in 2023, winning the AFC Champions League Elite twice in a row in 2025 and 2026, along with the Saudi Super Cup in 2025.

For his part, Newcastle United CEO David Hopkinson welcomed the new manager, confirming that Jaissle was the top choice following a thorough and comprehensive evaluation process, praising his technical abilities and leadership qualities that qualify him to lead the team in the coming phase.
