Shrimp Season... Strong Launch and Abundance

Local shrimp has returned to the markets with strength, achieving significant abundance. Abdullah Al-Sarheed, head of the Fishermen’s Union, revealed that approximately 13.8 tons of local "Am Na’ira" shrimp were supplied to local markets with the launch of the fishing season in the economic waters yesterday. He noted that prices ranged between 33 and 40 Kuwaiti Dinars per basket.
Al-Sarheed told "Al-Siyasa" that the first day of the season saw the release of 600 baskets of shrimp, with 500 baskets in the Kot market and 100 in the Sharq market. The second day saw the supply of 442 baskets, including 300 in Kot and 142 in Sharq. He expects quantities to double next week, reaching about 20 tons daily as fishing operations stabilize.
He pointed out that the second half of the year features three main fishing seasons: the Mid (mullet) season starting on July 1, followed by the Zubaidi (snapper) season on July 16, and then the shrimp season on August 1. He confirmed the availability of sufficient quantities of fish in local markets at reasonable prices.
He also highlighted the continued influx of imported fish despite regional tensions, which reinforces food security and ensures the year-round availability of fish in the markets.
Rising Mid prices and falling Zubaidi prices
Al-Sarheed explained that political and regional conditions affected the quantities of Mid caught within Kuwait and Gulf countries, leading to a rise in basket prices, which ranged between 75 and 160 Dinars depending on supply volume.
He confirmed that markets experienced an abundance of Zubaidi, which contributed to a drop in the kilo price from 24 to 9 Dinars, while basket prices ranged between 70 and 100 Dinars.
