Renowned Nepali climber Nirmal Purja and 9 others die in Pakistan avalanche

Following continuous search and rescue operations in the wake of an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan, the death of renowned Nepali climber Nirmal Purja and nine other climbers who were with him on the expedition has been confirmed.

Reuters quoted Elite Exped, the expedition organizing company, stating that Purja and his companions died as a result of the avalanche that occurred on the mountain, located within the Karakoram range near the Pakistan-China border.

The company, owned by Purja, announced in an Instagram post: “With profound sadness and sorrow, we confirm that Nirmal ‘Nimsdai’ Purja tragically lost his life following the avalanche on Broad Peak.”

The list of victims, alongside Purja, included five Nepalis, an Omani female climber, and climbers from Pakistan, the United States, and China.

The incident began when a collapsed snow block trapped the climbers around noon on Thursday on Broad Peak, which stands at 8,051 meters and ranks as the 12th highest mountain in the world. It is considered one of the difficult summits in Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region.

Purja, aged 43, previously set a record in 2019 by achieving the fastest ascent of all 14 of the world’s highest peaks in just six months, an unprecedented accomplishment.

The Nepali climber gained widespread international fame after Netflix released a documentary about his journey titled “14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.”
