Trump reaffirms Washington’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and support for the autonomy initiative

The Moroccan Royal Diwan announced that King Mohammed VI received a congratulatory message from U.S. President Donald Trump on the occasion of the 27th anniversary of his accession to the throne, which included an affirmation of the strong ties between the two countries and a reaffirmation of Washington’s position on the Sahara issue.

In his message, Trump stated that the United States recognizes Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and considers the Moroccan autonomy initiative “the only basis” for reaching a just and lasting resolution to the conflict, emphasizing that the continuation of the current situation is no longer acceptable and that his country will continue to support efforts aimed at ending the dispute.

The U.S. president noted that Moroccan leadership represents a pillar of regional stability, praising the Kingdom’s role in supporting peace, combating extremism, and enhancing security, as well as its contribution to the Abraham Accords, while affirming ongoing cooperation between the two countries to strengthen security in the Sahel region.

On the economic front, Trump clarified that the partnership between Washington and Rabat is poised for further expansion, noting that he has directed U.S. teams to enhance economic and social cooperation with Morocco, including in the Sahara region, with a focus on the energy, artificial intelligence, rare earth minerals, and defense sectors.

Trump concluded his message by reaffirming the commitment to joint efforts to build a new phase of bilateral cooperation that serves the interests of both peoples and strengthens the strategic partnership between the United States and Morocco.
